Southern Music break

Hey, it's Friday, y'all!

Here's one of the more haunting songs honoring the Confederate soldier. It was adapted from an Irish melody entitled, "The Boy with the Auburn Hair." Here's Miss Deborah Brinson with "The Southern Soldier Boy."

Oh if in battle he was slain
I'm sure that I should die
but I'm sure he'll come again
And cheer my weeping eye

But should he fall
In this our glorious cause
He still would be my joy
For many a sweetheart mourns the loss
Of a Southern soldier boy

Mike Foster,

Amen to that. I requested Deborah perform that song at a North Carolina LS conference some years back. It remains one of my favorites.

I first heard Kathy Mattea sing this in the early '90s on a PBS presentation of "Songs of the Civil War" - yes, an addendum to the Ken Burns' documentary. Still, a beautiful piece, and Miss Deborah performs it with grace and beauty. Thanks!

Regards,
David Smith

Stupendous! How could anyone listen to this without getting goosebumps?

I have really been enjoying this tune. Ol Reb, you should try it on your whistle, it's really sweet. Excuse my very primitive transcription, but play it along with the video and you'll see how it fits.

Notice lines 1, 2 and 4 are identical. I've been playing a cut between the pair of Bs on those lines, and a cut (or roll if you can squeeze it in) between the pair of As in line 3. I imagine a roll for the EEE would sound good - I'm working on that. I'm not too good at this stuff but I have fun with it.

My Irish flute has a sweet, low register - this tune sounds really good on it - but it sounds good on a whistle too.

I've also been watching the other videos of the talented Miss Brinson. I love it! She has a new fan!

Mike Foster,

Thanks! I'll let you know how well I do with it.

Miss Brinson would be delighted to hear she's made another fan. Drop her an email and buy her albums. Her Irish CD is really good -- it's in my CD now as a matter of fact.
