The United States Is Not a Nation!
You could look it up, says Brion McClanahan:
Nation – noun: a large body of people, associated with a particular territory, that is sufficiently conscious of its unity to seek or to possess a government peculiarly its own. (from dictionary.com)
State – noun: the territory, or one of the territories, of a government. (from dictionary.com)
In fact, says McLanahan, the United States was founded on the sovereignty of the distinct cultures that compose it:
Certainly no one in the founding generation would have argued that Virginia and Massachusetts possessed the same cultural heritage. Virginia, with its strong Cavalier tradition, and Massachusetts, with its Puritan or roundhead foundations, were clearly at odds during the seventeenth century and beyond. The two colonies may have been populated by white, English Christians and who shared a common language, "English," but as David Hackett Fischer beautifully explained in his Albion’s Seed, the two cultures were diametrically opposed in almost every conceivable way. From dress to food to speech, Virginia Cavaliers and Massachusetts Yankees were in many ways two separate nations, not simply separate cultures. The "shining city upon a hill" Puritans and their decedents never let Southerners forget their differences, nor did Southerners want to be lumped together with self-righteous Yankees. William Berkeley, the dominant figure in Virginia during the seventeenth century, despised Puritans and fought against them in the English Civil War. Later American sectionalism was little more than an explicit recognition of cultural differences and the existence of separate nations in North America dating to the early days of English settlement.
So the original 13 States were independent nations in the original sense of the word, and the central government was the servant of those States.
How times have changed.

The USA is exactly what Ronald Reagan called the USSR back in the 80's - an evil Empire.
you know what, im extremly pissed this eve. every football game i watch has to be started with the empire anthem...and people actually expect you to stand up when its on...i get a sick feeling in my gut...and now ole miss bans dixie form all games....i live in ms....i am ashamed, and mad, and disgusted, i wish i had the manpower to boycott ole miss, or the resources to put up big signs on the interstate, im glad ms state beat them. im tired of everyone telling me i need to be like everyone else, im sick of people bashing me for standing up for whats right, and im sick of the damn media and college pricks calling me a racist for having views that exist outside the demoncrat and repukeacan boxes. last but not least of sick cable tv as there are too many damn commercials on it which defeats the purpose of paying for cable.
Interesting to note that Brion calls the dictionary.com definitions statist... and completely absurd! and if true then the United States should simply be the "United State."
His excellent historical contrast illustrates well the distance between the Nationalism of today and the Federalism of the founders' generation.
Good stuff, thanks for the tip, Ol Reb.
True observation. A shame that after the successful War of Secession from England - done with a CONFEDERACY of States - that the powers that be suckered and or bribed the several State legislatures into adopting the "United States Constitution" in order to create a "more perfect Union". What a crock - I even hold George Washington accountable - he even acknowledged the so called "Constitution" was flawed. As a result, the US is a Marxist Superstate on its way to 3rd world status. To quote from my favorite period song " I hate this Yankee Nation and everything they do, I hate its Declaration of Independence too". Governor Faubus should have turned the National Guard into the State Militia and fought the malignant fool Eisenhower in 1957 and encouraged the other So States to join in - you know - I think it would have worked !!! Too late now though, may as well get your Red Flag and get prepared to face the Commissars, we've finally succumbed to Abe Lincolns New Republic.
