Italian mayors respond to Strasbourg ruling by hanging more crucifixes in schools
Now this is the way David can beat Goliath (hint, hint, Ole Miss students):
A number of Italian officials have responded to the ruling by the European Human Rights Court that ordered schools in Italy to remove crucifixes from the classrooms by taking unprecedented measures to preserve the Christian symbol.
According to the Italian daily “Avvenire,” the mayor of Sezzadio, Pier Luigi Arnera, has leveled a fine of 500 euros against anyone who removes a crucifix from a public place.
Arnera explained that the displaying of the crucifix in “places other than churches does not affect the dignity of anyone, because it is one of our cultural references.”
Exactly. Big government doesn't care about protecting minorities; the point is to destroy organic culture, which impedes the growth of government power.

Perfectly written!
I like this mayor. we southrons should take note. Try and snuff out our flag and who we are and we will give you more.
I respect your opinions, and though I agree with you 90% of the time, I disagree with you here.
As a proud American and non Christian, I must say I see no problem in banning religious symbols in schools. I am a strong believer in the strong distinction in and barrier between state, religion, school, and government.
Of course you can argue that Western nations were constructed through the influence of Judeo-Christian values or whatever, but it's secularism and liberty that distinguished Western nations, in my opinion.
Perhaps the time is ripe for Southern mayors, sheriffs and governors to see that by defying DC they could really help their people, and get extremely popular all at the same time.
Sherry,
Thanks, and do drop in again!
Anonymous,
That's the spirit! A little rebellion now and then is a good thing. Keeps you young - and free.
Freeland,
The mayor made it clear he sees the Crucifix as a cultural symbol as much as a religious one.
Mike Foster,
Folks like Perry seem to grasp this. Opportunism? Maybe, but that's going to motivate all politicians.
What bothers me about this case is that it was made by "European" court in Strasbourg whose members will not have to live with the consequences. If an Italian court had made the ruling, I would not have had a problem with it, but for a foreign court to rule in this matter is wrong, because people should have control over their own affairs, which is what your movement is about.
Hugh K. Arnold,
Me, too. At least, it would've been a little easier to swallow. Europe has the EU (Leviathan Light) to erase local cultures, and we have Leviathan Central to watch over us.
