The disease and its cure

Running a world-wide empire has coarsened Americans' humanity, and made a mockery of our self-proclaimed Christian values, says Paul Craig Roberts:

For whatever the reason, morality has shown itself to be an impotent force in 21st century America. Americans show no remorse at over one million dead Iraqis and four million displaced Iraqis due entirely to an American invasion based on lies and deception. The lies and deception are now well proven. Yet, there has been no apology for the horrors that Americans inflicted on Iraq.

Why is the president of the United States contemplating sending yet tens of thousands more US troops to kill people in Afghanistan?

The answer is that the United States is an immoral country, with an immoral people and an immoral government.

The government is hopelessly immoral. But there is hope for the people, says Believers Against The War:
Believers Against The War was founded to challenge all Christian believers to examine the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq in the light of the Bible and the Constitution - both of which prohibit unprovoked aggression. We hold the same position on the occupation of Afghanistan.

Today, many of God's people have forsaken the gospel of Christ and turned their hearts toward the corrupted teachings of men. Political allegiances have been bought in exchange for the love of sound doctrine - many have gone astray.

The sprawling bureaucracy of the Federal government has only one aim, and that is to extend and tighten its grip on the people it feeds from and rules. There is no other means of keeping that monstrosity alive. The evil perpetrated in our name is not of our doing, but does depend on our passive acceptance, on our support -- ultimately, on our consent.

Do we sit back and let that hellish machinery continue to grind away? Or do we accept the responsibility for the crimes committed in our names, and end them by taking up the cause of working for subsidiarity, for human-scaled, responsive government -- the only cure for empire and its soulless, inhuman policy of perpetual war?
