Cultural genocide at Ole Miss

Some cultures can be celebrated. Others must be snuffed out:

Tempers are flaring all over the Ole Miss campus. They're fighting over a fight song.

The school's chancellor says the band must stop playing "From Dixie With Love" because of a chant students added to the lyrics.

'No love for Dixie' read the headline Wednesday on the Ole Miss student newspaper. School leaders pulling the piece from the marching band's playlist is something everyone on campus is talking about.

Dean Reardon, who banned the song, dismisses the students' complaints with the Roman Polanski defense -- the kids brought it on themselves:

The students who chose to say "The South will rise again" killed the tradition” says Dean of Students Dr. Thomas Reardon.

Reardon says there were several warnings to stop the chant. When it continued at a game last weekend, that was the final straw.

“That does not convey who we are” says Reardon. “It also does not convey the progress we've made as a university or show any respect to the people who have made tremendous sacrifices to bring us where we are.”

Whoa, there, Dean. Shouting "The South will rise again" fails to show respect to the people who brought us where we are? So these young Southerners should respect the Yankee invaders who subjugated their ancestors?

Memo to Ole Miss students, from the office of the Dean: Stop this talk about wanting to rise back up. Accept the fact your people were defeated, and we won't take anything else away from you.

Keep Dixie! Boot Reardon! He is either a carpetbagger or a scalawag. Neither of which is wanted or needed in any Southern state.

Seems there was a time when student "activism" was mostly liberal. Seems now those liberal kids are running the show and don't like their own tactics being used against them. Let's hope the students do not give in to the silly notion of let's all be identical in the name of diversity.

Trust me, as a recent Ole Miss graduate, I can tell you that the student body will not take this lying down. Expect chants of "the South will rise again" to be heard much more frequently. The Dean should be fired. Banning the song is bad enough but antagonizing his own students in this way is reprehensible. Ole Miss will never get a dime from me.

Anonymous,

That's the most welcome news I've heard in a while. I hope Battleflags bloom like wildflowers all over the campus.

I was very excited to see this.

I went to university in the South, but most of the student body seemed to be from outside the South, especially from Asia.

This is just wonderful news that the Ole Miss factory hasn't yet fully unrefined its Southron human resources.

The South shall rise again! (whatever disparate, minuscule parts remain...)

Billy "Georgia Flagger" Bearden here...

Here is my plan.

From now on - here is a multi pronged attack that must be continued until the dean relents, or is replaced ASAP.

At every opportunity, the now banned song will be played - from from Ipods to boom boxes to elaborate sound systems to cars and trucks during tailgate parties to the school radio channel. Folks at Ol Miss can syncronize and plan certain outbursts ahead of time.

At each home game of any sport that is outdoors - including graduation - a banner plane flyover will tow THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN.

At every game from now till submission, a free flashcard will be distributed to select audience members. One side will read "The South WILL Rise Again" and on the other will be (when all are flipped over to the reverse side) will be a huge Battleflag.

T-shirts, Bumper stickers and lapel stickers or buttons will be made and passed out that state "The South Will Rise Again, Dean and Chancellor will fail!"

The Colonel 2 will make hundreds more appearances

RISE UP OL MISS!!! Take none of this a day longer! FIGHT BACK _ HARD LOUD AND REBEL PROUD! Only with Y'all will the South ever stand a chance to rise again and the hell with reardon!

Its strange that Mississippi State can still ring their cowbells even though noisemakers are illegal but, Ole Miss must give up its Confederate flag, the band playing Dixie & eventually the mascot name of Rebels.

A culture can be exterminated ONLY if it's members permit it. Hitler killed six million Jews - but the Jews remain. He killed tens of thousands of gypsies - but the gypsies remain. Lincoln, Sherman, Sheridan and Custer killed tens of thousands of Indians - but the Indians remain. And, hundreds of thousands of Southerners were killed, raped, tortured and robbed and their homes and culture desecrated - but UNTIL RECENTLY, the Southerners remained. Now it's up to the folks at Old Miss. Stand up and live - or lay down and die.

OK someone please explain this to me: I completely understand the idea that Southerners should take pride in their unique culture. I visited Georgia recently and was struck by the warmth and friendliness of everyone I met. The South IS distinct from the North, and it has a beautiful way of life. The North is a wonderful place too; both are special in their own ways.

However - I am confused by some of the comments you have made, and the comments on this page. You all talk about "yankee invaders" during the Civil War. You say Southerners were enslaved during the Civil War, etc. Don't you all know that a primary reason the Civil War was fought was to end slavery? I assume (really hope!) everyone here is against slavery. Therefore, in a way, I would expect Southerners to appreciate, even a little bit, that the defeat of the South in the Civil War was a triumph for human rights. So I really really cannot understand the comments about the Yankees hurting the South in the Civil War. It's very strange. I DESPERATELY hope that you all don't endorse slavery

Jen,

You'll never see anyone advocate slavery on this site, except for the apologists of the Empire who think it's our duty to serve our masters in DC.

As for slavery as the justification of the invasion and conquest of the Southern people, ask yourself this: Do people really fight wars to do good deeds for others? Or are money and power the real motivations? And why was it that only here was it necessary to wage a horrific war to end slavey, when everywhere else in the world, that imported institution was ended peacefully?

The only answer is that the slavey issue was a cover for a power grab by the bankers, industrialists, and politicians of the Northeast, similar to the centralization going on in Europe at about the same time. Prussia became dominant in Germany, as did Sardinia in Italy to form unified Germany and Italy, respectively.

For a good intro into the War for Southern Independence, check out this Lew Rockwell article.
