Here come the Microstates!

I just love discovering a site dedicated to devolution/secession. The latest such find is cominganarchy, and it's featuring a political map of Europe as it may appear in the not-so-distant future. It not only shows the actual 14 nations that have appeared since 1990, but also an independent Scotland, Flanders, and Catalonia, just to name a few. But it's the author's explanation of why he did not include Wales and Crete that I found especially interesting:
I will argue that two local conditions are necessary for a viable movement and successful independence.
First, the state must be well off economically and able to hold its own, i.e. it must have more to gain than lose. Hence, states like Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria are the two richest in Germany, essentially subsidizing the rest would have more motivation than the poor underdeveloped east German states which feed off the rest. The second condition is that the region must have a well developed and unique identity which comes in the form of a strong dialect or different language, history of independence or autonomy and other characteristics that go into defining a culture.
Hmmm. Doesn't that sound familiar?

Thanks for the link to a most interesting website, Old Rebel. Yes, I believe microstates are the wave of the future. Megastates are going to collapse from their own ponderous foolishness, including multi-multi-trillion dollar debts and bailouts. To me it seems the only logical end to what is happening now.
There is something bright on the horizon, although there might be a bit of darkness between here and there.
rex osborne,
I believe the longer the ruling elite tries to forstall the inevitable, the greater the coming crash.
With DC expanding its immoral, senseless wars of conquest, and deepening our debt, they can hold the monster together for a while, but it's all in vain.
Worse thing is, I think they know it, and are just bleeding the system for all it's worth while they can.
Even worse, the founding stock of America will itself likely organize as a "micro state" within its own former territories.
Ironically, the modern push for centralized government makes the argument for devolution even stronger. It is much easier to achieve central planning in a small nation like Sweden than it is in a nation like the United States. At some point even left-wing statists will have to admit that devolution is the only way for them to achieve their goals of a centrally-planned nation.
I agree that the South would be much better off financially on its own. The problem is that many Southerners have bought into the idea that the South is poor and backwards and would collapse if cut off from the Feds. We must be able to demonstrate to the Southern people that their own lives will be improved and that they will be better off financially under an independent South. Obama's impending tax hikes and energy cost increases and the inflation of the U.S. dollar should make this argument easier to make. We must be ready to capitalize when that moment comes.
Maybe the LoS could come up with a professional looking flyer along these lines that we could print off and distribute on our own? I realize the LoS doesn't have a lot of money to work with but why is more not being done to get this message out? The current situation in this country is a goldmine for recruiting. The LoS should be running ads on local talk-radio stations and designing flyers and encouraging members to distribute them. We can't let this opportunity go to waste.
Harold Thomas, a frequent visitor to this blog, has offered up a map of 19 nations on the NAmerican continent for consideration over at the North American Secessionist Congress, October 2010 Forum.
