SPLC advising local Hispanic group

Scenario One:

Immigrants desiring nothing more than to become part of America make their way to their new country, where they learn the language and culture, find jobs, buy homes, and contribute to their adopted homeland.

Scenario Two:

Colonizers determined to recapture lands they believe belongs to them force the natives to adjust to the new dominant culture.

Scenario Two could never happen, of course. Unless, that is, the invading colonizers received help from powerful organizations waging perpetual war against the natives, all the while pretending the colonizers are only keeping alive the noble tradition of Scenario One.

No one would fall for a scam like that, would they? Actually, it's happening in Alabama:

A civil rights group is working with local Hispanic residents who want bilingual signs for Albertville businesses.

The Southern Poverty Law Center is “serving in an advisory capacity” to La Voz de la Comunidad, according to Jose Cardenas.

Cardenas is an outreach paralegal for SPLC’s Immigrant Justice Project. He released the statement Thursday that said members of the group — whose name translates to the Voice of the Community — want businesses in Albertville to put Spanish on their English-language signs. ...

The Montgomery-based SPLC monitors what it calls “hate groups” and works to teach tolerance. SPLC publishes “Hatewatch,” a page on its Web site that chronicles possible hate crimes.

Did you catch that? Those last two sentences imply that if you oppose the SPLC, you're probably guilty of a "hate crime." Better order that bilingual sign now.

And check out this prophetic observation from one of the colonizers' supporters:

“We think it’s a chance for Albertville to become a city of the future,” said Anita Stancil, a member of La Voz de la Comunidad, or the Voice of the Community.

No doubt she's right. But then, is that the kind of future the people of Albertville want? Or does it matter what they want?
