Americans Take Jobs They Once Pooh-Poohed

This rotten economy is so bad, Americans are happy to find any kind of work:

This summer, the guy running the Tilt-A-Whirl at the carny might be a laid-off, middle-aged accountant instead of the usual bored college student. And the towel attendant at the pool might be from East Providence instead of eastern Europe.

All over the country, resorts and other summer businesses are getting swamped with applications from out-of-work Americans, many of them professionals. They are competing for jobs usually filled by young people and foreigners – making beds, serving brunch, mowing lawns, running concession stands and operating carnival games and rides.

It's just as bad in Australia -- except for one thing. Australians are having a tough time finding work there, too, but the Australian government is actually trying to protect its citizens by cutting back on the number of immigrants. The idea is to open more opportunities to native-born Australians. Whoa! (Think that could catch on here?) And here's an even more mind-blowing bit of news -- look who's doing it:

With a recession looming and the center-left government expecting unemployment to reach 7 percent by mid-2010, Immigration Minister Chris Evans said the intake of skilled migrants would be reduced by about 14 percent.

Australia goes to the polls in late 2010 and immigration has been a charged issue in past polls, particularly following economic downturn.

There's an old Southern saying: "Only Nixon could go to China." So isn't it interesting that it's a center-left government that's able to cut immigration to protect Australian jobs? The left can do it in the name of protecting "our working class," while conservatives seeking to curb runaway immigration would be vulnerable to the "r" word.

Of course, we don't have any choices in this country -- there's only one globalist party, and it stands for multi-culturalism, perpetual war, and Big Government to oversee both.
