Freakonomics takes on the SPLC
Most of us ho-hummed at the SPLC's latest report crying -- no, screaming, "Wolf!" After all, we've seen it before. Other patriotic and non-PC groups have long known the inside scoop on the SPLC's questionable fundraising efforts, which Dees & Co. try to keep shrouded in self-righteous silence.
However, the SPLC's latest report claims the alleged rise of "hate groups" is significantly influenced by the deteriorating economy. Is that so? Some scholars decided to scrutinize this claim, and what they found is rather interesting. Here's the bottom line:
But economic downturns don’t necessarily stoke racial tension or violence. In fact, most economic research finds no correlation at all between hate crimes and the economy.
Looks like the days of blindly accepting the SPLC's every utterance are over.

If the economy gets any worse and the donations really start to dry up, Mo & Mark might have to hire some mean and ugly boys to go out in the dark and raise some kind of faux racial rukus. When times are tough, it might take drastic measures to keep raking in dollars from dummies.
Perhaps Mo still has some contacts from the old, old days when he was briefly a Klan lawyer. Of course those fellows are a bit long in the tooth by now, but maybe they have some unemployed grandsons...
rex osborne,
Ha! Wouldn't surprise me a bit.
