Slate editor: If Obama Loses, it's because of racism

Did Jacob Weisberg really say that? Yes, he did:

Much evidence points to racial prejudice as a factor that could be large enough to cost Obama the election. That warning is written all over last month's CBS/New York Times poll, which is worth examining in detail if you want a quick grasp of white America's curious sense of racial grievance.

And he foresees terrible, terrible things happening if Obama does lose. Things like -- this:

If Obama loses, our children will grow up thinking of equal opportunity as a myth. His defeat would say that when handed a perfect opportunity to put the worst part of our history behind us, we chose not to. In this event, the world's judgment will be severe and inescapable: The United States had its day but, in the end, couldn't put its own self-interest ahead of its crazy irrationality over race.

That's right, only the United States has a race problem. Well, except Iraq, where blacks cannot get top-level jobs, and are insulted with the epithet "slave." Then there's Singapore, which seceded from Malaysia as the only solution to continuing race riots between the Malays and Chinese. Oh, and then there's that little Arab-Jewish kerfuffle that just won't go away. And then ... ah, forget it.

But isn't it odd that Weisberg doesn't mention another New York Times poll, the one that revealed only 2% of blacks support McCain?

But, you see, when blacks reject a white candidate, it's not because of racial prejudice. And the reason why is very simple. It's because ... oh, there's the phone. I gotta go.
