The Old Confederacy needs a third Reconstruction

The Wilmington Journal reports below that Rev. William Barber, President of the North Carolina NAACP, was elected to the national NAACP Board of Trustees. Barber says of his election:

"I'm calling for the thirteen former Confederate states to come together, and deal with the uniqueness of the issues hat we face dealing with education, incarceration and economics, and really start talking about a new (Southern) Reconstruction 3, since the first two were cut off at the knees."

It's hard to imagine the President of the North Carolina chapter of any Southern heritage organization making such an inflammatory statement, and Barber's comments should not go uncriticized. You can respond to the article with a letter to the editor at wilmjourn@aol.com You can respond directly to the North Carolina NAACP at naacpncwebcom@gmail.com

Thanks to NC South!

Forgive me for being blunt, but what is exactly is he saying? I've got a general idea, but a little help would be appreciated.

I always know something, but need to make sure before I go on thinking my thoughts are correct.

This would be somewhat akin to a German living in Israel saying that there should be another holocaust.

I am sorry, but this man is an ass.

Of course, he probably has no idea what Reconstruction was. He believes in the Yankee myth of the War of Northern Aggression and the following occupation and subjection of Southerners, both white and black.

Not to mention the long term effects of the absolute ruin of the Southern economy and the destruction of many homesteads, families, and cities!

A 3rd reconstruction, hmmmm. Ok, whites were disenfranchised and occupied, reduced to economic colonies of the north the first time around. How bout you just try it again but be forewarned, there will be h*ll to pay if do.

I'm with you Gage--I'm not sure what this guy means by his statement.

As I started reading it, I thought that maybe what he was saying was that the South (since we're always the racists apparently) needs to pay more attention to the problems facing the black community (like the white community isn't also having problems with economics and education).

Then, he goes on talking about the South needing a 3rd Reconstruction because "the first two were cut off at the knees." That's where he throws me. Is he saying that the South didn't have ample opportunity to suffer from the first Reconstruction? I beg to differ!

I'm not certain what he considers the 2nd Reconstruction. Is he referring to the Civil Rights era when the Federal government again declared war on States Rights and individual rights such as property rights and the right of freedom of association? I have no idea, and if so, how was that "cut off at the knees?" The Feds certainly succeeded in doing away with those rights too.
