Maryland troopers spied on activist groups

Speaking of civilian surveillance -- it's beginning to look like any dissent brands one as a "terrorist" these days:

Undercover Maryland state troopers infiltrated three groups advocating peace and protesting the death penalty — attending meetings and sending reports on their activities to U.S. intelligence and military agencies, according to documents released Thursday. ...

The documents, which include intelligence reports and printouts from the database, show that several undercover officers from the state police's Homeland Security and Intelligence Division attended meetings of three groups ...

The activist was identified as Max Obuszewski. His "primary crime" was entered into the database as "terrorism - anti govern(ment)." His "secondary crime" was listed as "terrorism - anti-war protestors." The database is known as the Washington-Baltimore High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, or HIDTA.

"There were about 75-80 protestors at the rally and none participated in any type of civil disobedience or illegal acts," said one report of a demonstration against the death penalty at the SuperMax jail.

Still, information about the protesters and their activities was sent to seven agencies, including the National Security Agency and an unnamed military intelligence official.

Remember -- freedom of speech is one of our most cherished possessions ...

I love Big Brother

... so we have to make sure you don't abuse it.

But isn't this
" freedom of speech "
daily being redefined ? Will it not reach the point where we'll only be allowed to " talk of the weather " , or some other irrelevant nonsense ?

We've allowed many idols to be erected that are beyond examination or question , elevated them indeed to a status only God should inhabit .

And it's been done largely in a
" lawful " manner .
Reckon it all depends on the God and the law you ascribe to .

Dear Mother! burst the tyrant's chain, Maryland!
Virginia should not call in vain, Maryland!
She meets her sisters on the plain-
"Sic semper!" 'tis the proud refrain
That baffles minions back again, Maryland!
Arise in majesty again,
Maryland! My Maryland!

I see the blush upon thy cheek,
Maryland!
For thou wast ever bravely meek,
Maryland!
But lo! there surges forth a shriek,
From hill to hill, from creek to creek-
Potomac calls to Chesapeake,
Maryland! My Maryland!

Thou wilt not yield the Vandal toll, Maryland!
Thou wilt not crook to his control,
Maryland!
Better the fire upon thee roll, Better the blade, the shot, the bowl,
Than crucifixion of the soul,
Maryland! My Maryland!

I hear the distant thunder-hum,
Maryland!
The Old Line's bugle, fife, and drum,
Maryland!
She is not dead, nor deaf, nor dumb-
Huzza! she spurns the Northern scum!
She breathes! she burns! she'll come! she'll come!
Maryland! My Maryland!

What a shame these words have been forgotten.

va rebel,

Good point, but I think we're already there. The quote below is from an eye-opening piece featured on this blog a few months back. It compared how the US and old Soviet elites managed their domestic troublemakers. It noted that the Soviets bludgeoned dissenters, which was far too crude -- and ineffective for DC:

"The American way of dealing with dissent and with protest is certainly more advanced: why imprison dissidents when you can just let them shout into the wind to their heart's content?"

We have a population that responds to accounts of the government's crimes with "America is the freest nation in the world," and shrugs off citizen surveillance with "If you're not guilty, you have nothing to worry about."

So, yes, we're already shouting into the wind.

damon crowe,

Inspiring lyrics! Sadly, they were composed and sung by a better class of men than what we have today.

I went to see a horror flick yesterday, "Washington You're Fired!" which documents in excruciating detail (for 1 hour, 45 minutes) exactly how the Bill of
Rights has been shredded by the present Administration.

Especially horrifying was a long, long list of Executive Orders taking over practically everything in the event of a declared emergency. It made Adolf Hitler look like an amateur.
