Imagine WNC as its own state

The Asheville Citizen-Times approvingly notes the high levels of support of younger people and Southerners for secession from DC, and wonders if Western North Carolina might secede.

Seeing as how Asheville is mutating into San Francisco in the Appalachians, I'd have no objection. That is, if we can figure out how we can get them to take Chapel Hill and Durham along with them.

I started to say don't lump the rest of the NC mountains in with Asheville, but then I thought of Boone, which is only a few miles from me, and which has been largely rainbowfied by the accumulated "diversity" of Appalachian State University.

On any Saturday night, King Street in Boone will strongly resemble the barroom scene in Star Wars, except I don't think any of the alien critters in Star Wars sported lavender dreadlocks.

rex osborne,

Lavender dreadlocks would be too exotic for the aliens in Star Wars.

Chapel Hill, Durham, and don't forget Greensboro!

Asheville is a cultural wasteland.

I could imagine WNC it's own state. I could see elementary school kids walking to neighborhood schools, I could see soda fountains full of teenagers, I could see prayer in schools. I could see local townships, that could balance a budget, low property taxes, no income tax, and a very low sales tax. I could see children respecting adults. I could see the fathers going to work at well paying jobs.

This was the way Chattanooga, Tennessee looked in 1965, before forced federal busing. Not black children in our neighborhood, but thugs from the hood.
