Credit where credit is due
And we're only happy to accept it. From Conservative Heritage Times:
A Zogby/Middlebury Institute poll shows support for concept of secession now over 20 percent and is higher amongst youngsters. While I’m not a believer in secession as an ideology, clearly in the case where it's called for, removing the pyschological barrier that secession is a “fringe” idea is very important. And this is happening because organizations like the League of the South, Second Vermont Republic, Middlebury Institute, Free State Project, Christian Exodous and their websites have made the idea more popular.

"Secession belongs to a different class of remedies. It is to be justified upon the basis that the States are Sovereign. There was a time when none denied it. I hope the time may come again, when a better comprehension of the theory of our Government, and the inalienable rights of the people of the States, will prevent any one from denying that each State is a Sovereign, and thus may reclaim the grants which it has made to any agent whomsoever."
Jefferson Davis
The "idea" of secession was the cornerstone of Americas' foundation. The triggers that set the levers in motion in the 1770s. Are the same ones that exist today, only the names have changed. The tariffs then are replaced by direct and indirect taxes or fees. Free commerce is no more. Just ask a farmer or moonshiner. Standing armies and navies are posted in certain States. We are spied on, arrested and harassed by agencies of the empire. We have limited access for redress of grievances to the courts. The government then as now offers no alternative, but to submit. Instead of Hessian's and Indians attacking and murdering civilians. We now have 13th and 14th ammendment gangs preying on the populace as they please. As I recall a saying from the good book: "there is not one new thing under the sun, not one". But theres a time and season for everything under that sun. I believe the seeds that were planted by our forefathers are about spring forth...again.
freebird,
Great quote! Amazing how relevant it still is for today.
marksc,
Absolutely. Those are the ideas that keep me going.
What bothers me is that while secession is becoming more popular, the distinctions between Southerner and Yankee seem to be blurring.
frank,
That's true in many ways, but our distinct heritage remains the same. Look at how Yugoslavia was successfully melting its ethnic groups into one -- when all of a sudden, the whole thing fell apart, and the different peoples reformed themselves into their own nations.
Also, we have an interesting perspective from Scotland on that very subject in today's postings.
