Obama would do 'everything' to help Israel defend itself

Looks like Charles Krauthammer has at least one presidential candidate willing to sign on to the "Israel First" doctrine. And Obama is touted as the peace candidate? Surprisingly, yes -- by people who should know better.

Obama's promise to get the US mired down in even more unnecessary, open-ended conflict in the Middle East could've been made by Bush, Cheney, or any other Neocon:

"As president, I will do everything that I can to help (Israel) protect itself ... We will make sure that it can defend itself from any attack, whether it comes from as close as Gaza or as far as Tehran," Obama told a synagogue in Philadelphia, according to his campaign aides.

He said US-Israeli cooperation, although successful, "can be deepened and strengthened."

Whatever glorious "change" Obama intends to bring us apparently doesn't extend into DC's belligerent foreign policy. But here's what really gets me:

Robert Wexler, Florida Democrat in the House of Representatives, told reporters after the meeting that Obama "unequivocally rejects the Palestinian right of return" -- a perennial sticking point in Palestinian-Israeli peace talks -- because he understands that Israel must remain a Jewish state.

And they have every right to protect and preserve the ethnic makeup of their country -- but why is it considered perfectly natural for them to reject colonization, and not us? When we express similar goals, we're branded as "xenophobes."

Do you think Obama is concerned about the scathing he will get in the media if he doesn't make such promises?

pinky,

Of course. If you're not a globalist campaigning on an "invite the world/invade the world" platform, you're not going to get past the primaries.

So, in order to implement any change, one has to work within the system.
.
Presently, the system includes a strong Israeli presence that will not allow any deviance from its agendas. It is asking for sudden death not to support the Israeli agenda.
.
Do I not understand something here?

I must credit my brother for bringing this up last week, but back in '67, Israel proved her military might in the Six Day War. I am not really sure what has happened since then to Israel, but with a substantial Middle Eastern force "knocking at the door," Israel ended that aggression in less than a week! Do WE really need to protect Israel? Of course not. BUT we must always have a reason to meddle in Middle Eastern affairs and "looking out" for Israel seems to be a good reason.
Take the Iran argument for example. Our ELECTED officials are all eager to bomb the hell out of Iran, but why? It was in fact Iran that tried to broker a "peace" deal in Iraq when we are CAUSING crisis there, but still we are antagonistic towards Ahmadinijad! I cannot grasp exactly why yet, considering that most of the Middle East are enemies of Israel and we are holding hands with the Saudis and what of Egypt? Iran has become our punching bag and yet what has become of our military endeavors in Afghanistan? These "politicians" in DC are so intent on spreading war that we cannot finish one war before they are ready make a "preemptive strike" on the next country that is a "great threat to our national security." Indeed there is a great threat out there, but it resides in Washington with leaders who rob the citizens of the states to create turmoil around the globe.

damoncrowe,

Exactly. Israel can look after itself. Not being able to rely on the US to bail it out might even make Israeli leaders less provocative and more willing to negotiate with their neighbors.

(1.) Gordon Brown, Britain's prime minister, and (2.) the Pope both made mention in the media, this week, of the need for a global perspective regarding problems with which civilization is faced--rather than some narrow minded perspective.
.
I think both of them were sending a message to Americans that the track we are on is a program of destruction.
.
We must find common ground even though we might not like the idea. Life is too precious to waste on the simple minded selfish antics that are so prevalent in the Middle East.
.
It is a simple issue that has been complicated by the combined power of religion and politics.
.
We can't settle it in a few words; but, it is a never ending process that our government's administration must enter.
.
IMHO.
